The Swan Hotel

The Bedford Swan Hotel & Thermal Spa sits directly on The Embankment in the centre of Bedford, overlooking the River Great Ouse, and its location is probably one of the biggest things that separates it from a typical town centre hotel. The building has a long history and combines traditional features with more contemporary spaces, while couples have the option of holding the ceremony, wedding breakfast, evening reception and accommodation all under one roof. There are several function rooms available for weddings of different sizes, including the State Room overlooking the river, the larger Coach Room and smaller spaces for more intimate celebrations. For guests travelling into Bedford, having everything in one building can make the logistics much easier, while the central location means the venue is straightforward to reach and does not require everyone to travel between separate ceremony and reception locations.

From a photography point of view, the obvious advantage is that the River Great Ouse and The Embankment are literally outside the hotel. That gives us a recognisable Bedford setting without needing to put the couple in a car and disappear somewhere else for photographs, which is particularly useful when the schedule is tight or when they simply do not want to spend a long time away from their guests. The river changes considerably depending on the weather and time of day, so on an overcast day it can give us something soft and understated, while stronger evening light can create reflections and warmer colour across the water. Inside the hotel, the larger windows, period detailing and reception spaces offer another visual direction entirely, so a full wedding can have a good mixture of indoor and outdoor photography without needing several different venues.

The Swan works especially well for couples who like the idea of a classic Bedford wedding but still want easy access to outdoor photographs and a setting that actually looks recognisable. Being right on the river gives the venue a sense of place rather than feeling like a hotel that could be anywhere in the country, and that matters when I am trying to create photographs that genuinely belong to the wedding rather than simply using a generic background. The fact that guests can stay onsite and that the main parts of the day can happen within the same building also means fewer interruptions and less travelling, which usually helps the wedding feel more relaxed. For me, the strongest combination is the contrast between the more traditional interiors and the open riverside outside, because it gives us plenty of variety while keeping everything very close together.
