Shortmead Manor

Shortmead Manor is a private wedding venue just outside Biggleswade, set within around 24 acres of gardens, woodland and grounds, with a historic Georgian manor house at the centre of the estate. One of the things I like about Shortmead is that it does not really feel like one single type of venue because different parts of the property have completely different personalities. Around the main house you have more formal gardens and elegant interiors, then further out there are open lawns, woodland, a lake and more relaxed areas that feel much less structured. The venue offers several ceremony options depending on the size of the wedding, including intimate indoor spaces and larger covered areas, while receptions can make use of the Stables, marquee and surrounding grounds. There is also onsite accommodation and preparation space, which means couples can get ready at the venue and keep most of the day in one location.

I have photographed a wedding at Shortmead and spent time around the venue before the day as well, and from a photography point of view the amount of variety is probably its biggest strength. You can create photographs inside the manor using the period furniture, windows and elegant rooms, then step outside and have completely different surroundings within a few minutes. The formal gardens work well for family photographs and relaxed portraits, while the wider grounds give us much more space if we want something less structured. It is also a useful venue when the weather refuses to cooperate because there are genuine indoor alternatives rather than having to force every photograph outside regardless of what the rain is doing. Once the weather improves, there is enough space to simply change direction and make use of the gardens again without disrupting the rest of the day.

Shortmead suits couples who want their wedding to feel a little more individual and who like having room for guests to spread out rather than spending the whole day inside one function room. The grounds work particularly well for summer weddings, lawn games, food trucks and more informal parts of the day, while the manor itself gives the wedding a more elegant setting when needed. I also like that you do not need to take the couple away for a long portrait session because there are so many useful locations close together, which means even twenty minutes can produce a good variety of photographs if that is all they want. From my perspective it is a venue that lets me react rather than follow a predetermined list of locations, because I can simply look at the weather, the light and what is happening around the wedding and decide which part of Shortmead makes the most sense at that moment.
