Anna and Phil’s Typical English Weather Summer Wedding at Shortmead Manor, Biggleswade

Last summer, I had the pleasure of photographing the beautiful wedding of Anna and Phil at the stunning Shortmead Manor in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Nestled within 24 acres of picturesque grounds, this elegant manor house dates back to the 16th century, providing a truly timeless setting for their special day.

Despite the weather being a little rainy (rain in England, who would have thought!), it certainly didn’t dampen the couple’s spirits. In true British fashion, umbrellas were on hand (courtesy of the wonderful manor staff), but the warmth of the day and the couple’s love kept everything glowing!

A Relaxed Start at Shortmead Manor (At Least for the Bride!)

The morning kicked off with Anna getting ready in the manor’s charming outhouse. Surrounded by her mum, daughter, and bridesmaids, the atmosphere was laid-back and full of laughter. Anna was calm and collected - her relaxed, easy-going nature shining through. Her dress, white with subtle detailing, was understated yet elegant - plain but far from simple, radiating class. Meanwhile, when I caught up with Phil, he was a bit more on edge! Thankfully, his best man was there to lend support, possibly with the help of a pint of beer (nothing excessive - just a little groom-calming trick!).

Pink Roses, Classical Music, and a Dreamy Outdoor Ceremony

The ceremony itself was held outdoors, under a thatched alcove beautifully adorned with flower arrangements created by Pretty Petals Floristry from Bedford. The delicate pink roses (as you can see in the photo!) were a central feature, perfectly complemented by soft whites and greenery. Even with a bit of rain, it made for an absolutely romantic backdrop.

After exchanging vows, everyone moved to another outhouse for champagne and speeches. Adding a touch of sophistication, a classical guitarist filled the air with soft melodies. As the rain let up, guests and their younger selves (yes, this was “kids are more than welcome wedding”) took full advantage of the garden, playing outdoor games like giant Jenga and giant chess. It was the perfect blend of elegance and fun!

Captivating Moments Inside the Manor

Before the reception, I took Anna and Phil inside the manor for a quick photo session in one of the vintage rooms. With its antique clocks, fireplace, and beautifully aged furniture, it was like stepping into a scene from history. We didn’t take long - one of my strengths is capturing posed photos that feel natural without spending too much time creating the pose – and the shots we got there turned out stunning. It helps when the couple feels relaxed around the photographer 😊

Reception Fun: Cakes, Ice Cream, and a Dance Floor

The reception was held under a marquee with around 60 - 70 guests, featuring not one, not two, but three rustic cakes and plethora of muffins, cupcakes and sweets in jars! After the cake cutting, guests were treated to a surprise: an ice cream van that not only satisfied their sweet tooth but also provided a fun photo op for the newlyweds. As the guests enjoyed their ice cream, the marquee was transformed into a dance floor, ready for the couple’s first dance. The band played all the hits, turning the night into a lively celebration.

Anna and Phil’s day was full of love, joy, and just the right amount of spontaneity. Rain or shine, nothing could take away from the happiness they shared. It was an absolute honour to be a part of it.
